In a significant political development, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet on Saturday amid mounting nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, particularly the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The resignation marks one of the most consequential ministerial exits in the Narendra Modi government’s third term and comes after weeks of sustained public pressure led by students and youth groups, specifically the Cockroach Janta Party.
As news of Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation reached the protest site at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, scenes of jubilation broke out among the young protestors who loudly cheered, waved the national flag, hugged one another, raised slogans, sang patriotic songs celebrating what they described as a hard-fought victory after weeks of sustained agitation. Videos from the site showed students dancing and chanting as the announcement spread through the crowd.
Reacting on the development, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke exclaimed, “We have done it.” Calling the resignation “a major victory for the Cockroach Janta Party,“ Dipke said the outcome vindicated the movement, which had consistently placed Pradhan’s resignation at the centre of its demands. He emphasized that the protests spearheaded by the CJP had demonstrated the power of peaceful, youth-led demonstrations in holding those in power accountable. At the same time, Dipke indicated that while the resignation marked a significant milestone, the movement would continue until its remaining demands were addressed.
Pradhan, who has headed the Ministry of Education since 2021, submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that his decision was intended to uphold accountability and prevent the ongoing controversy from affecting students’ futures. In his resignation letter, he maintained that he had accepted moral responsibility while emphasizing that the issue should not be exploited for political or other purposes.
The resignation follows weeks of demonstrations triggered by allegations of exam paper leaks and irregularities that shook confidence in India’s Education system. Protesters argued that repeated lapses had jeopardized the careers of millions of aspirants and demanded ministerial accountability alongside structural reforms to the examination process. The protests eventually evolved into a broader movement seeking greater transparency, stronger safeguards against paper leaks, and improved governance in higher education.
Politically, Pradhan’s departure represents a rare instance of a senior Cabinet minister stepping down in response to public pressure. The Modi government had initially defended its handling of the crisis while promising reforms, including measures to strengthen examination security. However, as protests intensified and public sentiment hardened, the resignation became increasingly difficult to avoid.
The development carries implications beyond the Education Ministry. It is likely to intensify the debate over the credibility of India’s examination ecosystem and place greater scrutiny on agencies responsible for conducting national-level entrance tests. The government is now expected to accelerate reforms aimed at restoring public trust, including tighter security protocols, technological safeguards, and enhanced accountability mechanisms.
For the opposition, the resignation is being viewed as a political victory and validation of its criticism of the government’s handling of the examination crisis. For the ruling BJP, however, it may serve as an attempt to contain political damage while demonstrating that accountability can accompany administrative reforms.
