Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan turned into a major centre of political mobilisation on Sunday as massive crowd gathered along with leaders and supporters of the Opposition INDIA bloc for the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally, launching a sharp attack on the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The rally, organised under the leadership of the Congress and supported by several Opposition parties, witnessed the participation of prominent political figures, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, and other INDIA bloc leaders.

The mobilisation began with ‘Chalo Dilli’ march from Minto Road-Connaught Place junction, with senior Opposition leaders travelling in a convoy together before joining supporters on the route to Ramlila Maidan. Party workers, student organisations, and civil society representatives also marked their presence in large numbers in the demonstration.

The issue of ‘Vote Chori’ formed a major part of the Opposition’s Campaign at the rally. The Opposition alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has resulted in the large-scale deletion of legitimate voters’ names, potentially depriving eligible citizens of their constitutional right to vote.

Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders accused the Election Commission of compromising its independence and questioned the transparency of the electoral roll revision exercise.

Addressing the rally, Rahul Gandhi said, “Gyanesh Kumar will be removed from the post of CEC and he will go to jail. This is not an ordinary theft. This is the theft of voice and expression of every Indian citizen. This country does not run on hate. We are people of Ahimsa. We do not hate Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, or Gyanesh Kumar. But Narendra modi ji, Amit Shah Ji, and Gyanesh Kumar Ji – you have attacked the soul, the constitution, and democracy of this country and we are are not ready to accept this.”

The INDIA bloc has maintained that electoral integrity is fundamental to a functioning democracy and that any exercise involving the deletion of voters’ names must be transparent, accountable, and subject to independent scrutiny.

The Opposition also called for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of failing to address concerns surrounding the electoral process.

Opposition leaders unite on a common platform

The rally brought together leaders from different political parties under a common political banner, reflecting the INDIA bloc’s attempt to consolidate Opposition forces around the issue of electoral accountability.

The presence of senior leaders from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Left parties added significance to the gathering.

The demonstration also followed a symbolic ‘public impeachment’ programme against the Chief Election Commissioner organised by Opposition leaders a day earlier at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence.

The Opposition’s campaign appears aimed at taking the debate over electoral reforms beyond Parliament and bringing it directly to the public.

BJP launches counterattack

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however rejected the Opposition’s allegations and criticised the rally, accusing the INDIA bloc of politicising the electoral process.

Union Minister J P Nadda described the demonstration as political drama and alleged that the Opposition was attempting to create an atmosphere of instability.

The Election Commission has also defended the SIR exercise, maintaining that the revision is a legitimate process intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries from electoral rolls. It has rejected allegations of political bias.

The competing claims have further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.

Heavy security, traffic restrictions across Delhi

The rally prompted extensive security arrangements across the national capital. Delhi Police deployed more than 4,000 personnel, supported by Central Armed Police Forces, while over 200 CCTV cameras, drones, and surveillance arrangements were put in place.

The venue was divided into multiple security zones to manage the gathering and ensure public safety.

Traffic restrictions and diversions were also imposed across several parts of central Delhi between 10 am and 5 pm, with commuters advised to avoid roads around Minto Road, ITO, Delhi Gate, and other affected stretches.

While Delhi Police estimated a gathering of approximately 50,000 people, INDIA bloc organisers projected a significantly bigger turnout.

A larger political battle over electoral credibility

Sunday’s rally at Ramlila Maidan represents more than a conventional Opposition demonstration. It highlights the growing political battle over the credibility of India’s electoral institutions and the functioning of the Election Commission.

For the INDIA bloc, the issue has become an opportunity to bring together diverse Opposition parties around a common demand for electoral accountability.

For the BJP and the Election Commission, the challenge lies in countering allegations that they maintain are politically motivated and defending the legitimacy of the electoral revision process.

As political temperatures rise, the controversy surrounding voter-list revisions is likely to remain a significant issue in the national political discourse.
