A Muslim youth, identified as Suleman Rahim Khan Pathan, was brutally lynched in broad daylight by a mob in Jamner, Jalgaon, on August 11. Suleman, a 21-year-old resident of Betawad Khurd village, was the only son of his parents. He had recently completed his 12th standard and aspired to become a police officer.

On the day of the incident, Suleman had travelled to Jamner to submit online applications for police recruitment when he was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted by a mob. According to the reports, the youth was apparently sitting and chatting in a café with a 17-year-old girl from another community when a group of 10-15 men confronted him and snatched away his mobile phone.
The men then dragged Suleman out of the café, forcing him into a vehicle. Suleman was taken to different locations, paraded on the streets and constantly beaten with wooden sticks and fists till he lost consciousness. He was finally taken to his village, where the mob dumped him in an unconscious state near the door of his house. His family tried to intervene but they too were assaulted including his 80-year-old grandfather who sustained some injuries.
Suleman was taken to Jalgaon District Hospital for treatment but perhaps it was too late. He was declared brought dead on arrival. In a statement given to Maktoob media, Suleman’s father Rahim Khan had said, “Every inch of my son’s body was covered with wounds. He was left completely battered by them. They attacked me, my wife, and my daughter also as we tried to save him. I had only one son. Until the offenders receive the harshest punishment possible under the law for what they did to him, I will not stop.”
The incident has triggered widespread protests in the Jamner taluka with locals demanding arrest of all the attackers. So far, the police have arrested 8 suspects in this case, booking them under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the charges of kidnapping, rioting, unlawful assembly, and murder. Further Investigation are still on.
